Dorothy H. Sparks - Journal Review

Sparks, 96, of Crawfordsville joined her family in Heaven on Thursday evening, July 20, 2017, while a resident of Bickford Cottage, Crawfordsville.Dorothy was born Dec. 14, 1920, the daughter of John and Minnie (nee: Buchanan) Howell in Bandana, North Carolina. She married Gaw J. Sparks on Jan. 12, 1946, and they started their married life in the Pleasant Grove community of Yancy County, North Carolina, before moving to Johnson City, Tennessee, where they lived for 44 years. After her husband’s passing Dorothy moved to Waynetown in 2004 and finally to Crawfordsville in 2016.Dorothy is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Diane Sparks of Crawfordsville and Gary and Melodye Sparks of Johnson City, Tennessee; brother-in-law Elden Bever of Rock Hill, South Carolina;sister-in-law Thula Sparks of Micalville, North Carolina; sisters, Jean (Charles) Usery of Lowell, North Carolina, and Jo (Max Dean) Garland of Valdese, North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002; three infant brothers; and six sisters.A memorial service will be held for Dorothy at 6 p.m. Sunday July 23 at Liberty Chapel Church, 3942 W. C.R. 500N, Crawfordsville, and officiated by Pastor Allen Sparks and Pastor Derrick Tamm. Locally memorial donations may be made to Liberty Chaple Church.On Tuesday, July 25 a graveside funeral service will be held at noon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery in the Brush Creek community of Yancy County, North Carolina, with her sons, Allen Sparks and Gary Sparks, officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Waynetown, and Holcomb Brothers Funeral Home of Burnsville, North Carolina, are assisting the family with these arrangements.

Blairsville, passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg.The son of Frank A. Mase Sr. and Kunsie (Darazio) Mase, he was born June 17, 1932 in Latrobe.Frank was a very active member of SS. Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, was very active in the Democratic Party of Westmoreland County and was a member of the New Derry Sportsmen’s Club.He worked in construction and was a former deputy sheriff in Westmoreland County.Frank loved playing bocce, the Italian hand game morra and being with the old-timers baseball league, especially those who played on Dino’s team.Surviving are two daughters, Deborah L. Hudak and Pamela J. Glance, both of Blairsville; two grandchildren, Frank Diana and Cody Glance; two great-grandchildren, Vincent Diana and Clint Glance; two brothers, Lawrence L. Mase, of Kittanning, and Ronald R. Mase, of Denver; a sister, Inez Waldron, of Mansfield, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.Mr. Mase was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Winifred (Kelly) Mase, in 2000; a brother, Joseph Mase; and four sisters, Christina Torockio, Marie Ponderendolph, Julia Kish and Dale Klesyk.The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Prayers of Transfer will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home and a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in SS. Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, with Fr. Stephen R.
